General News
· Don’t forget the change of venue and dates for our upcoming monthly meetings. Please look at the Diary Dates page at the end of the newsletter for the changes. It is very important that all members note these changes. Basically we will be meeting in the GREVILLIA ROOM and on the THIRD WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH
· The club has introduced an extra DROP-IN CLASS. This class will work as an open forum style of class for those who wish to clarify any problems they are having with their courses. The classes will be for SEVEN students per class each week and students MUST BOOK in the week BEFORE the sessions. If you are the eighth person to book then you will be the first person for the following session. Students will only be able to book for THREE WEEKS in a row at any given time so that all members have access to this session.
· Members please note that there are now TWO new reference books available at the club for students to borrow - please enquire at the desk:
· WINDOWS XP
· EXCEL
· All donations for the CHRISTMAS HAMPER are now being requested and will be gratefully accepted at the club. Please refer to the list at the desk for suggestions for the donations. Hamper Raffle tickets will be available at the AGM meeting on Wednesday or at the desk in the clubroom. Zena Bailey will be in charge of the hamper and the ticket sales.
· The club would like to welcome a new member to our trainers - MR REG KATTE. Reg will be taking classes on Friday afternoons. Welcome Reg.
· The club committee would like to point out that the computer club is a PRIVATE NON PROFIT ORGANISATION, which is run completely by VOLUNTEERS who are NOT PAID for all their precious time. This club is completely autonomous from Holroyd Council - we only rent our clubrooms from the council.

· Meg Winks has been constantly plagued by ill health this year and would like to take this opportunity to apologise to the committee for all the inconvenience caused by my absence. I would also like to apologise to all the students from my classes for the constant disruption and to all the wonderful trainers who have stepped in to cover these classes. I am eternally grateful to you all and I owe you. THANK YOU. Further to this I will be moving house early next year so I will be away until the third semester.

FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THE 1500’S
WORD WATCH
· Most people got married in June because they had their yearly bath in May and still smelled pretty good by June. Hence the JUNE BRIDE. They had begun to smell again so the bride carried A BOUQUET OF FLOWERS to hide the body odour.
· Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had first option of the clean water, followed by the sons and any other males, followed by the women and finally followed by the children and babies. By then the water was so muddy it was hard to locate the baby, hence the expression - “DON’T THROW THE BABY OUT WITH THE BATH WATER”.
· Houses had thatched roofs with no wooden underlay or ceiling where most small animals lived to get warm - from dogs and cats to mice and bugs. However, when it rained it became slippery and the animals would slide off, hence the expression - “IT’S RAINING CATS AND DOGS”
· With all these creatures inhabiting the roofs a real problem of them and their droppings invading the bedrooms was always present. Hence THE FOUR POSTER BED, with a sheet hung over the top of the posts, came into their own to afford some protection.
· Only the wealthy could afford proper floorboards, but most floors in the poorer houses were made of dirt, hence the expression “DIRT POOR”.
· The wealthy mainly had slate floors, which became very slippery in the wet. They put straw (THRESH) on the floor which was HELD in place by a piece of wood to alleviate this, hence the expression “THRESH HOLD”.
· Bread was usually divided by status with the poor and workers receiving the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family receiving the middle section and the guests and the wealthy receiving the top half, hence the expression “THE UPPER CRUST”.
· Lead cups were used to drink ale or whiskey and this combination would knock people out for a couple of days. They were often taken for dead and were prepared for burial where they would be laid out in the kitchens for the families to gather to pay their respects, eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up or not. This led to the expression “HOLDING A WAKE”.
· Due to finite burial spaces coffins were often dug up and it was noticed that they had scratch marks on the insides - perhaps an indication that someone had been buried alive. Thus, it was decided to put a bell inside the coffin for the person to pull. Someone would then sit beside the grave all night to listen for the bell, hence the expression “THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT”. Thus, someone could be said to be “SAVED BY THE BELL” or was considered “A DEAD RINGER”.
· It was always a special treat to eat pork, so that when visitors came over they would always show off their bacon as it was a sign of wealth if the man of the house could “BRING HOME THE BACON”. Then they would cut of some bacon and all sit around and “CHEW THE FAT”.
